I’ve blogged about motorcycle earplugs, but what about earplugs for other vehicles? Do we really need earplugs when we drive cars or trucks? Perhaps so. In a recent press release about hearing damage, a study on the damaging effects of driving a convertible was cited.

The study printed in the Journal of Otolaryngology found that the noise to the left and right of a convertible driver can reach more than 88 decibels at speeds over 50 mph. Higher speeds may increase those figures to even higher, more damaging, decibel levels. Remember, permanent hearing damage can occur after repeated exposure to decibel levels at merely 85.

Motorcycling earplugs may come in handy for those Sunday afternoon drives in your convertible. If anything, they would make your drive more comfortable and at the same time, protect your ears from permanent damage. There are many different types of earplugs that can protect your ears while you drive your convertible. The following three are most likely your best choices.

You can purchase Moldex Spark Plugs Pocket Pak. There are two pairs of contoured shape earplugs in a handy plastic case. They are bright in colour and highly comfortable. They are capable of blocking up to 35 decibels making them extremely protective.

Another good choice would be Alpine MotoSafe earplugs. You can hear ambient noise because of the attenuating filters, but they also block damaging decibels. You’ll be able to hear your passengers and sounds such as emergency vehicles. They are also reusable. Just a quick wash and dry and they’ll be good to go for your next road trip.

For the avid driver, ProGuard makes custom motorcycle earplugs. You simply order the complete kit and take it with you to a predetermined audiology lab where impressions will be taken of your ears. Send the impressions back in the kit and your custom earplugs will arrive in just 14 business days. You’ll be amazed at the extreme comfort and protection custom earplugs provide because they’ve been created to fit the exact shape of your ear canal. They come with a few different filters to change the level of protection.

This is just another example of how earplugs come in handy for many common activities. Whether you’re driving a convertible or a motorcycle, there’s a pair of earplugs that will help protect your hearing for many years to come while you enjoy your road trips. Protecting your ears is an easy remedy, so make sure you protect your hearing today!

Cheers for now!

Keeping up with safety measures and ensuring your employees comply can be tricky. You need to make sure you have plenty of safety products such as eye protection, first aid kits and work earplugs. You also have to figure out how you can encourage your employees to comply and have a system in place to check. Without these ingredients to a successful safety program, you may find yourself in a bad spot if an employee is injured or an inspector should happen to stop by.

One key to a successful safety program is to appoint one or two employees to manage the system. Rather than having safety products a part of normal purchasing, have an employee take regular inventory on safety products and submit their order through purchasing in plenty of time to ensure supply doesn’t run low. Certain items such as foam earplugs can be kept in large bulk amounts.

Your employee in charge of safety inventory should also keep the safety supply area organized. First aid kits need regular straightening to ensure items can be found quickly. Jumbled clutter in a safety area makes it difficult for employees to grab what they need and return to the work floor. They might even opt to skip grabbing their earplugs or safety glasses if the items cannot be easily found. Foam earplug dispensers can be mounted on the wall and the earplugs are dispensed one at a time, eliminating waste.

Foam earplug dispensers are also highly visible, which is another key component to ensure safety compliance. Moldex earplugs come in bright colours, which makes it easy for your safety manager to check compliance. There are various protection levels as well, so no matter what your noise levels are, you can be sure your employees’ hearing will be protected.

Set up a reward system for compliance. Nominate one employee each month for “Safest Employee of the Month” and offer a bonus or dinner gift card. Reward is always the best way to encourage employees to perform at their very best.

Cheers!

Well, we’re a month into summer vacation, and with each passing day, the decibel levels in my home are getting louder. I’ve begun to wonder if wearing earplugs to drown out the noise of bickering kids would be considered irresponsible parenting. Is it okay if my iPod and earphones become a permanent fixture?

At first, summer was flying by. My two kids were happy to be home taking a break from the daily routine of going to school. Yes, my house was still noisy with the sounds of my kids and their friends from the neighbourhood playing a lively game of Wii sports or running in the sprinkler in the front yard. But those were “happy” sounds; laughter, giggles and screams of delight as they blasted each other with super-soakers and water balloons. Sounds that parents relish, not choose to block with earplugs.

Now, as the weeks pass, they are becoming bored and grouchy. Even the large group of neighbourhood kids are beginning to behave like a big pack of squabbling siblings rather than a group of buddies. “He did this, she did that, blah, blah, blah…” Arghhh!! It’s enough to drive a parent insane, especially the one that stays home with the kids AND tries to run a business from her home office!

So, this is what has me pondering whether I could responsibly wear foam earplugs, and not just any foam earplugs but Moldex Spark Plug earplugs that block enough decibels to drown out a jack-hammer or jet taking off. My problem, of course, is the worry that I’ll miss something important, like “Mom, is it okay if I skateboard off the roof?” You laugh, but I actually had a teenage cousin who did this and broke his arm (darn lucky that’s all he broke!).

And what about the bickering? Now, it doesn’t make much sense to use foam earplugs that only block enough decibels to protect my ears yet allow ambient noise and conversation to be heard. I’d still have to hear them fighting, but if I can’t hear them and don’t run in to separate them, will they eventually clobber each other or begin tossing the room about? Something about “survival of the fittest” comes to mind.

Night time doesn’t seem to offer as much relief as it used to, either. The sun sets later and consequently, the kids are up later, leaving little time for my husband and I to enjoy each other’s company without managing children. My kids don’t seem to have that innate knowledge that my sister and I had when we were little. As long as you’re quiet and not causing trouble, the grown-ups in the house seem to ignore the bedtime clock!

No, my kids continue to run about, bicker and call for assistance every 5 minutes. And of course, summer is host to plenty of sleepovers for which parents have the sheer joy of being up most of the night keeping not only their kids, but other people’s kids out of mischief. And why is it I always get tagged with this duty while my husband snores away in the bedroom with his sleeping earplugs?

Well, I can’t really wear earplugs and ignore the noise, nor can I put my earphones on and play my favourite tunes because of course, I might miss something important. Speaking of which, I don’t hear anyone right now. Hmmm… that usually means they are up to something they ought not to be doing. Maybe I like the noise better!

Cheers!

We’re all looking for ways to save money these days. I’m tired of hearing about the economic crisis, recession, down-turn or whatever you choose to call it, but we can’t ignore the fact that it’s crucial to save money both at home and in the workplace. Earplug Dispensers can help cut costs by purchasing your earplugs at a lower bulk cost AND by preventing waste.

When you need earplugs for the workplace, the best way to buy them is in bulk. Earplugs, of course, last forever, so you don’t need to worry about over-buying. Whether you need a high level of hearing protection or a means to allow your employees hearing protection and still allow communication, Moldex offers a solution. You can even purchase colourful Moldex Spark Plug earplugs in a bulk dispenser, offering a fun and highly effective solution for hearing protection.

Simply purchase the earplug dispenser wall mount, attach it to the wall and place the dispenser on the mount. All of the Moldex bulk earplug dispensers are designed to fit on the wall mount, so if you change your earplug from Purafit earplugs to Spark Plug earplugs, you won’t have to purchase another wall mount.

The dispensers are designed to drop one pair at a time into the hands of your employees, so you won’t end up with bunches of unusable earplugs on a dirty floor. The dispenser has no tray that has to be dusted either! Any time I can avoid dusting, I do!

Not only that, but you can be sure that compliance will increase. Earplug Dispensers are highly visible, so your employees will see the earplugs and remember to grab a pair. They are also very convenient, which makes it easier for your employees to grab a pair rather than searching through the safety closet or safety supply box.

The bright green colour of Mack’s Purafit earplugs makes it easy to check compliance. The dispensers, whether Moldex Purafit earplugs or Moldex Mellows earplugs are very easy for safety inspectors to spot. This will save you from fines that may be incurred for non-compliance.

There are other useful bulk earplugs, but if you have a high volume of employees, the earplug dispensers might be your best solution!

Potentially THE most comfortable earplugs, foam earplugs are highly versatile and are an important addition to your home safety kit or workplace safety standard closet. Beyond protecting your hearing, foam earplugs just seem to make life a bit more comfortable.

I can’t think of a place where comfort is more imperative than in the bedroom. And, sleep is SOOO important to your health. Obviously, sleep deprivation can cause fatigue, sluggishness, weakness and fuzzy thinking, but in addition, it has long-term affects such as premature aging! Yikes! Sleeping earplugs can block those annoying nighttime noises whether that’s a partner snoring or grinding their teeth or the neighbour’s yappy poodle they forgot to let in for the night.

You wouldn’t believe the noise level of some of the common things in a home. Lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and even some cheap, older dishwashers can have dangerous noise levels. The winner? Children’s toys, some of which have a decibel level as high as a jet taking off! Protect your ears (and sanity) with foam earplugs and your tot’s ears by turning down the volume or using toddler earmuffs.

Foam earplugs are highly adaptable to most ear canals, but for women and children, there are specialty sizes that may fit better than standard foam earplugs. Pretty pink women’s earplugs and soft, comfy junior foam earplugs will form fit to smaller ear canals making them more comfortable and effective.

For ultimate protection, industrial workers and other folks who are exposed to really loud noises, Moldex Spark Plug earplugs offer very high protection levels. Moldex Mellows earplugs are great for noisy environments where communication is necessary. They block the dangerous levels while still allowing for ambient noise and conversation.

Available in many different quantities, foam earplugs are fantastic for home or work. The new earplug dispensers available make compliance a snap and lower waste costs as one pair is dispensed directly into the employee’s hand. Speaking of compliance, industrial foam earplugs are really brightly coloured making them highly visible!

I keep a pair of earplugs with me at all times, and I always carry extra for long flights and vacations. It’s nice to have them with if one of my kiddos has trouble sleeping in the “strange” environment of a hotel. Personally, I sleep like a baby knowing someone else will be cleaning up the next day! Gotta’ love maid service!

Cheers!

Apparently, farmers are being told to wear hearing protection due to the noise level of pigs during feeding. The little oinkers squeal to the tune of 100dB or more while being fed! Remember that hearing can be damaged in as little as 15 minutes at 100 dB, so I guess if Farmer Joe wants to keep his hearing, he’s going to need some protection.

According to the NASD (National Ag Safety Database, United States), farmers have more hearing loss than other occupations. If you think about it, farmers are independent and therefore not governed by the usual safety laws that protect employees in an industrial setting by forcing compliance. So, even though many of the noises on a farm are at decibel levels high enough to cause hearing damage in a short time, the farmer may or may not protect his or her hearing or that of the hired help.

Hearing protection is one of the most inexpensive safety measures that exist. A simple Moldex Purafit 250 Pair Station is inexpensive, will supply hearing protection for 250 pig feedings and can be easily mounted outside the feeding facility for convenience. Another way to go for hearing protection on the farm would be reusable earplugs.

I wonder what other types of farming noises can cause hearing damage? A tractor carrying a heavy load is around 90 decibels. A petrol fueled grass cutter is 96 decibels. Doing some repairs or clearing some pasture? A circular saw and chainsaw both have noise levels of 100 decibels.

I had a hard time finding information on noise levels of farm critters other than pigs, but I imagine a barn full of dairy cows mooing during milking would be noisy, as would the milking equipment. What about neighing nags, braying donkeys and bleating sheep? (This is starting to sound like one of my son’s animal books!)

I found that llamas scream from time to time and “orgle” while they mate. Ostriches boom, which is an eery sound, but not necessarily damaging, so I suppose the ostrich farmers are safe.

I did find a story about some annoying chickens that were bothering the neighbourhood and a tragic story about 800 chickens who met their end via firecrackers. The noise literally scared them to death! Lawsuit pending.

As for the neighbours with the crowing roosters and cackling hens, I would suggest some sleeping earplugs. I’m sorry to report, however, that I don’t know of any hearing protection for the chickens themselves.

Cheers for now!

And you were worried about the new neighbour with the yapping pup! Be happy he didn’t bring a potbelly pig to the neighbourhood. According to a recent press release, pig owners beware! The noise from the little piggies during feeding can reach levels of 100 decibels which is enough to damage hearing in as little as 15 minutes of exposure per day.

The press release mentioned purchasing JenGen Blue Tassel Earplugs so the pet-owning celebs would look posh while feeding their piggies, but I would have to suggest something a bit more masculine for Mr. Clooney such as Heartech SilentEar earplugs or Moldex Purafit earplugs. I’m not sure a paparazzi pic with George wearing Audrey Hepburn style earplugs would do much for his dating life!

What about other pets? A couple of pooches yapping indoors might produce a noise level of 100 decibels. Birds can be rather noisy. The more exotic you go, the higher the noise level. The Moluccan cockatoo has a scream that can reach 135 decibels!

You’ll be fairly safe with silent snakes, chatty cavies and mewing kitties (unless you are the lady on the block with 30 cats!). If you opt for a chicken, pick the hen because the rooster is sure to wake the entire neighbourhood.

I’m not sure anyone can purchase a Howler monkey (or why they’d want to!), but apparently they are the loudest animal on land with a growl that can be heard 5 km away. A blue whale is the loudest mammal with a noise level of 188 decibels, of course that’s just a silly idea for a pet unless of course one should have ocean-side property.

As far as domesticated animals go, if you own a pig or a pack of pooches, you should seriously consider hearing protection. If your neighbour is the one with the ear-splitting swine or barking pack of beagles, you may want to look into some foam earplugs or plan on some sleepless nights and more than one headache!

Cheers for now!

For over 100 years, spectators at the world-renowned Isle of Mann TT motorcycle race have been amazed as records continue to be shattered and names such as Stanley Woods, Joey Dunlop and John McGuiness go down in history as some of the premier motorcyclists to participate in the races. This year, stars Valentino Rossi, Bradley Walker and Murray Smith will be attending the legendary event.

Are you planning to attend? If you are, you still have time to order your earplugs, and with decibel levels reaching 120 dB, you probably ought to make that preparation priority! Remember that hearing damage can occur almost immediately at 120 dB! And with 80 or more bikers screeching past for miles and miles of road, there is a high possibility of incurring hearing damage or tinnitus (painful ringing in the ears).

If you happen to be a participant, you probably already have your ProGuard Custom Motorcycle Earplugs. Spectators can find great hearing protection and comfort in many different motorcycling earplugs.

Moldex Spark Plugs earplug pocket pack is a great alternative to more expensive earplugs. They are convenient and I happen to keep a pack in my purse for those unexpected noisy occasions. They are very comfortable foam earplugs that you compress, easily insert, and the material expands to fit the contour of your ear canal.

There are also reusable earplugs that have flanges and are attenuating earplugs that filter harmful noise while still allowing you to hear conversations.

Remember that if you have to shout in order to be heard, the noise around you is damaging to your ears. Professional motorcyclists and racecar drivers have been protecting their hearing with earplugs for many years, and it’s time that the spectators did the same!

If you plan to bring your child with you, remember to protect their ears too! Children’s ears are very sensitive to noise. My kids are old enough for children’s earplugs, but young toddlers might prefer earmuffs.

You still have time to order your motorcycling earplugs because The Earplug Shop offers next day delivery.

Last year, petrol prices forced us to sell our 4×4 and purchase a motorcycle for my husband to commute back and forth from work. He bought a used Harley Sportster and though it’s not real big bike, it does tend to wake the neighbours in the morning if you know what I mean. It’s loud!

He’d only been riding it a few weeks when I noticed that he seemed to be ignoring me. He had mentioned that the office receptionist thought it was kind of cool that he was riding the Harley! I thought, should I be jealous? Then I realised what was really going on! He couldn’t hear me! When I would make a comment about a movie we were watching, it wasn’t that he was dismissing it, he literally didn’t hear me say it.

I realised this because I started noticing him turning up the volume and talking more loudly. Now, I’m not sure if he heard me say “please take the garbage out” and simply ignored me, but I did know based on the other symptoms that the bike we’d purchased to save money on gas was causing hearing loss! After a bit of research, I realized that this is a pretty common occurrence whether you’re a die hard biker or an occasional guest on the back of a bike (like me).

Hearing loss can occur at decibel levels as low as 85 and some motorcycles, including our little Sportster can have a decibel level of 100 decibels at idle, 108 at moderate rpms and 120 decibels at fully revved. In other words, hearing loss or tinnitus (painful ringing in the ears) can begin to occur while sitting on your Harley in the driveway!

We’d purchased a helmet for safety, but we hadn’t thought about my husband’s hearing. I’m sure there are times when he’d rather not hear me, but I decided it was best if we looked into purchasing motorcycle earplugs. At first, we couldn’t afford anything but a Moldex Sparkplugs Pocket Pack, and they worked beautifully, but then we looked into custom motorcycle earplugs and my husband found them very comfortable under his helmet.

I still use the Moldex Sparkplugs Pocket Pack if and when I ride. Call me a worrier, but the older I get, the more I appreciate the airbags in the four walls of my Honda! My husband on the other hand has recently purchased a leather jacket and I’m starting to wonder if he’ll want to go to Sturgis next year! Yikes! I think I’ll stick around here for my concerts rather than spend a few days eating bugs in the wind.

Cheers for now!

Meghan

P.S. If you ride, protect your hearing or his! Order your motorcycle earplugs, custom or disposable, today!
