Earplugs for Convertible Drivers?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

I’ve blogged about motorcycle earplugs, but what about earplugs for other vehicles? Do we really need earplugs when we drive cars or trucks? Perhaps so. In a recent press release about hearing damage, a study on the damaging effects of driving a convertible was cited.

The study printed in the Journal of Otolaryngology found that the noise to the left and right of a convertible driver can reach more than 88 decibels at speeds over 50 mph. Higher speeds may increase those figures to even higher, more damaging, decibel levels. Remember, permanent hearing damage can occur after repeated exposure to decibel levels at merely 85. (more…)

Trouble with Hearing Safety Compliance?

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Keeping up with safety measures and ensuring your employees comply can be tricky. You need to make sure you have plenty of safety products such as eye protection, first aid kits and work earplugs. You also have to figure out how you can encourage your employees to comply and have a system in place to check. Without these ingredients to a successful safety program, you may find yourself in a bad spot if an employee is injured or an inspector should happen to stop by.

One key to a successful safety program is to appoint one or two employees to manage the system. Rather than having safety products a part of normal purchasing, have an employee take regular inventory on safety products and submit their order through purchasing in plenty of time to ensure supply doesn’t run low. Certain items such as foam earplugs can be kept in large bulk amounts. (more…)

The Noise of Summer

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Well, we’re a month into summer vacation, and with each passing day, the decibel levels in my home are getting louder. I’ve begun to wonder if wearing earplugs to drown out the noise of bickering kids would be considered irresponsible parenting. Is it okay if my iPod and earphones become a permanent fixture?

At first, summer was flying by. My two kids were happy to be home taking a break from the daily routine of going to school. Yes, my house was still noisy with the sounds of my kids and their friends from the neighbourhood playing a lively game of Wii sports or running in the sprinkler in the front yard. But those were “happy” sounds; laughter, giggles and screams of delight as they blasted each other with super-soakers and water balloons. Sounds that parents relish, not choose to block with earplugs. (more…)

The Many Uses of Foam Earplugs

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Potentially THE most comfortable earplugs, foam earplugs are highly versatile and are an important addition to your home safety kit or workplace safety standard closet. Beyond protecting your hearing, foam earplugs just seem to make life a bit more comfortable.

I can’t think of a place where comfort is more imperative than in the bedroom. And, sleep is SOOO important to your health. Obviously, sleep deprivation can cause fatigue, sluggishness, weakness and fuzzy thinking, but in addition, it has long-term affects such as premature aging! Yikes! Sleeping earplugs can block those annoying nighttime noises whether that’s a partner snoring or grinding their teeth or the neighbour’s yappy poodle they forgot to let in for the night. (more…)

Can You Hear Me Farmer Joe?

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Apparently, farmers are being told to wear hearing protection due to the noise level of pigs during feeding. The little oinkers squeal to the tune of 100dB or more while being fed! Remember that hearing can be damaged in as little as 15 minutes at 100 dB, so I guess if Farmer Joe wants to keep his hearing, he’s going to need some protection.

According to the NASD (National Ag Safety Database, United States), farmers have more hearing loss than other occupations. If you think about it, farmers are independent and therefore not governed by the usual safety laws that protect employees in an industrial setting by forcing compliance. So, even though many of the noises on a farm are at decibel levels high enough to cause hearing damage in a short time, the farmer may or may not protect his or her hearing or that of the hired help. (more…)

Forget About the Barking Dog and Worry About the Squealing Pig

Monday, June 8th, 2009

And you were worried about the new neighbour with the yapping pup! Be happy he didn’t bring a potbelly pig to the neighbourhood. According to a recent press release, pig owners beware! The noise from the little piggies during feeding can reach levels of 100 decibels which is enough to damage hearing in as little as 15 minutes of exposure per day. (more…)

Don’t Ride without Your Motorcycle Earplugs!

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Last year, petrol prices forced us to sell our 4×4 and purchase a motorcycle for my husband to commute back and forth from work. He bought a used Harley Sportster and though it’s not real big bike, it does tend to wake the neighbours in the morning if you know what I mean. It’s loud!

He’d only been riding it a few weeks when I noticed that he seemed to be ignoring me. He had mentioned that the office receptionist thought it was kind of cool that he was riding the Harley! I thought, should I be jealous? Then I realised what was really going on! He couldn’t hear me! When I would make a comment about a movie we were watching, it wasn’t that he was dismissing it, he literally didn’t hear me say it. (more…)
