Start Christmas Shopping Now for the Music Lovers

Yet another article on the damaging effects of consistent exposure to loud music via earphones or concerts made me think about this year’s Christmas list. Do you have music lovers on your list? If you do, you should read this article and truly consider purchasing some hearing protection for them!

Hearing damage can occur after exposure to decibel levels as low as 85 dB. Hearing damage is permanent and irreversible. Tiny hair cells in the inner ear convert sound energy into electrical signals. These signals travel to the brain where the sound is interpreted. Hearing damage occurs when the hair cells are damaged, and the worst part is, they don’t grow back. This is why hearing damage is permanent and irreversible. The only way to improve hearing after hearing damage occurs it to wear hearing aids. Continue reading

How Will Hearing Loss Affect Your Relationships?

I mentioned this a few blogs ago: Earplugs now or hearing aids later! I’ll add to that: Earplugs now or divorce later? Studies show that marriages are negatively affected by hearing loss. Though there may be times you wish you couldn’t hear your spouse, consider how important communication truly is in a marriage.

Many marital problems have everything to do with a lack of communication between spouses. Feelings of resentment might build when emotions are held back. Frustration may build when one spouse feels the other is ignoring requests. So, when communication is thwarted with an actual physical inability to hear the other person, you can imagine how much this augments the situation. Continue reading

Trouble Singing? Wear Earplugs!

Well, perhaps your family does where earplugs when you attempt to sing, but seriously, I found an interesting article on wearing earplugs to improve your singing voice. So, if you truly are a singer or you have a child who shows promise, check this out.

Musician’s earplugs not only protect your ears from hearing loss, but they can help improve pitch. Plug your ears for a moment and talk or sing. Your voice will be much clearer to you. This is how earplugs can improve your pitch. You can hear yourself more clearly and better distinguish your pitch. Continue reading

Hearing Protection for Tweens?

Tweens are kids who are in between childhood and “teenhood” ages 8-12. My daughter falls in this category (almost 11). It’s a difficult age as they transition from playing with toys to thinking about boys. And the boys are very much over the “girl’s are icky” stage as well. It’s at this time when we start worrying about the big talks as well as other soon-to-be issues such as avoiding drug use, alcohol etc. We still want them to wear their bike helmets, even though they are more concerned about how the helmet will mess up their hair. Do we really have the time to worry about yet another issue such as hearing loss?

Well, we’d better because with all the noise in their world, many of our tweens could end up with irreversible noise-related hearing loss. They have iPods and other portable music devices, handheld video games and gaming consoles hooked up to surround sound. They will soon be attending more gymnasiums to watch sporting events that can reach very high decibel levels. Rock concerts may be a bit in the future, but with more and more musicians targeting this age group, you may be closer to a Miley Cyrus concert than you think! Continue reading

What Makes These Earplugs So Popular?

There are literally hundreds of choices when it comes to earplugs, but some earplugs seem to reign supreme: Alpine MusicSafe Pro, Macks Ultra SafeSound, Macks Pillow Soft Kids, Moldex Spark Plugs, Moldex Mellows, and Heartech Silent Ear. I thought I’d look these customer favourites over and determine why they are so popular!

Musician earplugs are highly popular these days with all the attention given to hearing damage that avid music lovers, rock stars and club employees were encountering without proper hearing protection. Alpine MusicSafe Pro earplugs are affordable music earplugs that allow you to choose the proper level of protection with three different attenuating filters: white for low level pub music, silver for music venues and gold for D.J.’s and others who are exposed to very loud music. I give these a top rating because they offer professional quality in protection, but at affordable rates for those of us who are not highly popular D.J.’s or rock stars! Continue reading

More Depressing News to Tune Out with Earplugs?

Wow, what a week for Hollywood! Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson and now, Billy Mays (the infomercial guy… Sham Wow, OxyClean etc.). Of course, Michael Jackson is deemed the most shocking death and you’d be hard pressed to turn on the television and not find something about the eccentric King of Pop. While I think it’s tragic that a music icon is dead and one who was only 50, I’m afraid I find myself reaching for my earplugs as my husband watches the news these days.

Yes, I remember watching the music video Thriller (remember when MTV actually showed music videos?) when I was a tween and watching the boys in my class attempt the moonwalk at every middle school dance. I think Michael Jackson made huge contributions to the entertainment industry, and I certainly don’t want to sound as though I’m tuning out the media coverage out of disrespect. Continue reading

The Noise of Summer

Well, we’re a month into summer vacation, and with each passing day, the decibel levels in my home are getting louder. I’ve begun to wonder if wearing earplugs to drown out the noise of bickering kids would be considered irresponsible parenting. Is it okay if my iPod and earphones become a permanent fixture?

At first, summer was flying by. My two kids were happy to be home taking a break from the daily routine of going to school. Yes, my house was still noisy with the sounds of my kids and their friends from the neighbourhood playing a lively game of Wii sports or running in the sprinkler in the front yard. But those were “happy” sounds; laughter, giggles and screams of delight as they blasted each other with super-soakers and water balloons. Sounds that parents relish, not choose to block with earplugs. Continue reading

Lend Me Your Ear (Just Not Literally!)

I thought I’d switch things up a bit and share my views on a couple of recent articles in The Guardian. Apparently, Van Gogh may not have chopped off his own ear. There’s speculation that his former friend and French Artist Paul Gauguin may have sliced off Van Gogh’s ear with a fencing blade during an argument. Does his lack of self-mutilation tendencies somehow make Van Gogh less of an artist? (Well, an “ear-less” I suppose!). Continue reading
