Stop Snoring!

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Do you snore? What about others in your household? If you or a loved one snores, it may be more than a minor annoyance. Let’s look at the facts behind snoring.

The basic mechanism of snoring is a partial obstruction of the airway by soft tissue at the back of the throat. When the person falls asleep, soft tissue at the back of the throat falls over the trachea. The snoring noise you hear is the rattle of the soft tissue.

A person who suffers from sleep apnea will actually stop breathing for a short time until they are startled awake by the lack of oxygen. If you ever hear your partner make gasping noises followed by a loud snort sound, this is probably what’s occurred.

Give the Gift of A Good Night’s Sleep!

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Are you struggling to find that certain someone a special gift? For many this holiday season, diamonds, pearls and expensive electronics are a bit out of the price range. That doesn’t mean you can’t purchase special gifts for those you love. You just have to be a bit creative.

How many people appreciate a good night’s sleep? I’m not sure I know anyone who does not, especially if they are parents! Giving the gift of a good night’s sleep is quite simple and affordable!

Start with a nice basket or reusable container (green is in too!). You have many options when filling the basket if you consider all that is required for a good night’s sleep. Let’s start with a few of my favourite “good night” basket ideas. (more…)

Time to Fall Back: What Will You Do with Your Extra Hour?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

One of my favourite days of the year is when we get to set the clocks back an hour. In fact, I usually don’t set the clocks back until later in the day so I can have that lovely feeling of gaining an hour. It’s kind of nice to be in the middle of a task, see the time as being noon and having the realization: “Oh, it’s only 11! My morning isn’t over yet!” This year, I’ve been so busy with work (which is a good thing) that I’ll be spending my extra hour sneaking in work. What will you do with your extra hour? (more…)

Sleeping Aids for Weight Loss?

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Can sleeping earplugs help you lose weight? Well, that depends on whether you want to lose fat or muscle. Silly question, right? Of course we all want to lose fat and develop toned, defined muscles. According to a recent study, sleep deprivation may be responsible for increased lean body mass (muscle) loss during a weight loss diet.

The subjects in the study both ate healthy, low calorie diets to promote weight loss. Both groups (sleep deprived and well-rested) lost weight during the study, but the sleep deprived group lost mostly lean body mass with only 26% of their weight loss being fat. The well-rested group experienced a fat loss of 57%! (more…)

How Can Earplugs Improve My Health?

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Have you been feeling a bit sluggish? Do you have frequent colds or infections? Have you been a little more irritable than normal or encountering mood swings? If you haven’t been sleeping well due to noise or other sleeping distractions, then you might be experiencing many health problems. Sleeping earplugs may be just what you need to improve your health now and for the future.

A while back, we moved to a different house and sleeping became very difficult for me. Our new neighbours and their barking dog who I swear, barked louder than any dog I’d ever heard, kept me up at night. My husband had started snoring again because he’d gained back some of the weight he lost. I thought I’d lose my mind! (more…)
