When Do You Need Earplugs to Protect Your Hearing?

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Health concerns are abundant and the media tends to inundate us with advice on health and wellness such as weight loss, nutrition and exercise. One area that they seem to neglect is how to protect our hearing. Our ears are abused on a daily basis and most of us experience some amount of hearing loss, even as early as our teens and twenties. Children are very susceptible to hearing loss.

When do you need to protect your ears with earplugs?  Noise at 85 decibels or higher can cause hearing damage, sometimes permanently. What sounds are you exposed to on a regular basis and for how long?

If you love music, chances are you go dancing or to concerts. Blaring music at either a club or a concert arena (especially if you get the good seats!) can cause hearing damage in less than 30 seconds at 115 decibels. You can purchase inexpensive earplugs or invest in custom earplugs if you are a professional or an avid concert/club attendee. Only the damaging sounds are filtered, so your hearing is protected, but the music still sounds fantastic!

You can damage your hearing in as little as 15 minutes after continuous exposure to 100 decibels. Your iPod set at volume level 5 can produce 100 decibels. If you listen to your tunes regularly, you might consider purchasing high-end earphones that protect your hearing while accentuating the music to recording studio quality.

How about the workplace? Do you work in a factory? How about an office? Though we tend to think of noisy machinery as being the only need for earplugs, even an office setting can produce moderate hearing damage, or at the very least, distraction from your work.

In an industrial setting, noise levels can reach more than 100 decibels. Employers are to provide earplugs for employees and make sure that they are compliant.

Even the low hum of busy city traffic that you might hear out your office or bedroom window can cause hearing damage when you are exposed to it for 8 hours a day. Background noises in an office can be distracting. For better concentration and a more peaceful workday, you can purchase inexpensive earplugs that are soft, safe and comfortable.

Think about all the things you do at home, work or at play that are noisy. Are they damaging? Remember that hearing damage can occur at 85 decibels.

Lawn mower = 95 decibels
Leaf blower = 115 decibels
Cinema = 94 decibels
Children’s Toys = (up to) 150 decibels (Check out these tot-sized ear muffs in pink or green)
Sporting event = 127 decibels
Health club = 120 decibels (And you thought only your wicked personal trainer was dangerous!)

Cheers!

Don’t Forget to Pack Your Earplugs!

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Do you have a vacation planned? You’ve probably been thinking about what you’ll pack and whether you really need this outfit or that pair of shoes. If you have children, you have even more concerns about what to pack and what can be left at home.

You might not even be considering one item. You may not use earplugs at home, but when you travel, you may find yourself wishing you had some in your suitcase! Uncomfortable flights, noisy trains, roaring motorcycles and the strange sounds at a hotel may simply be an annoyance and some can actually be damaging to your ears. Whether you’re going by plane, train, car or bike be sure to pack your earplugs. (more…)

Don’t Ride without Your Motorcycle Earplugs!

Monday, April 13th, 2009

Last year, petrol prices forced us to sell our 4×4 and purchase a motorcycle for my husband to commute back and forth from work. He bought a used Harley Sportster and though it’s not real big bike, it does tend to wake the neighbours in the morning if you know what I mean. It’s loud!

He’d only been riding it a few weeks when I noticed that he seemed to be ignoring me. He had mentioned that the office receptionist thought it was kind of cool that he was riding the Harley! I thought, should I be jealous? Then I realised what was really going on! He couldn’t hear me! When I would make a comment about a movie we were watching, it wasn’t that he was dismissing it, he literally didn’t hear me say it. (more…)

Do You Have Your Musician Earplugs for Summer’s Concerts?

Monday, April 13th, 2009

I’m very excited for this summer’s music concerts, are you? Some of my favourite musicians are coming to town and I’ve already purchased the tickets. I’ve also made another purchase for the first time: Musician’s earplugs! Why? Well, for one, I want to protect my ears so I can continue to enjoy music for the rest of my life. The other reason is one I hadn’t realized until last summer. The quality of music is incredible when you use musician’s earplugs.

Permanent hearing damage can occur in a short time, and if you’re a regular concert goer or just an occasional attendee, you need to protect your ears. Many famous musicians such as Pete Townshend have experienced hearing loss in one or both ears. DJ’s, club goers and concert goers have reported developing tinnitus which is a constant, painful ringing in the ears making it difficult to sleep and causing dizziness and loss of equilibrium. How Can Earplugs Improve My Health?

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Have you been feeling a bit sluggish? Do you have frequent colds or infections? Have you been a little more irritable than normal or encountering mood swings? If you haven’t been sleeping well due to noise or other sleeping distractions, then you might be experiencing many health problems. Sleeping earplugs may be just what you need to improve your health now and for the future.

A while back, we moved to a different house and sleeping became very difficult for me. Our new neighbours and their barking dog who I swear, barked louder than any dog I’d ever heard, kept me up at night. My husband had started snoring again because he’d gained back some of the weight he lost. I thought I’d lose my mind! (more…)

Earplugs May Save Your Child’s Hearing!

Monday, April 6th, 2009

I’m sure like any parent, you pay close attention to your child’s safety needs. We have rule in our house that requires states ‘If it has wheels and your on it, you better have a helmet on or you lose the wheels!’ As well, I douse them with sunscreen and make sure they take their vitamins every morning.

I do all those things and more to protect my children, but I have to confess that I hadn’t thought much about protecting their ears with children’s earplugs. After all, I’m an 80s child who spent many hours listening to heavy metal bands (yes, my children are familiar with ACDC and more!) and attending loud rock concerts. I never wore earplugs and took my hearing for granted. (more…)
